So, you received a fancy new toy from Santa. Fantastic!!! Hopefully it came installed with Windows7… If not, not to worry but Vista really isn't all that secure… however, these steps will still work just remember that Win7 is indeed the way to go for PC's in 2010! Microsoft has come a long way with stability, security, and usability. Win7 is by far the most solid release MS has put out in a long time (if not ever). So back to that new toy of yours… Out of the box it was probably easy to set-up and get started using. It's probably running pretty smoothly, being responsive, and generally running great. Well, that's how they all run fresh from the store… but that will change in a few months, weeks, days… and here is why.

When the manufacturer (Dell, HP, Acer, IBM, etc.) installs the hard drive (HDD) in the device, it is done so with a base HDD image. This image is what the manufacturer will tell you to 'restore' should something go terribly bad with your new system. This restore process will generally wipe any programs, data, configurations, etc. you've added to the system since first booting it up. So, before reading any further, please make sure you have the steps to perform the manufacturer restore process or at least their support number handy. What will be detailed here should (in theory) only help your system run more efficiently, however there is always a chance the something could go wrong… Should you decide to follow the steps contained in this series of posts, you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK.

OK, so your system came with all sorts of software installed. Some of that software is core and should remain, like Windows operating system (OS) applications, i.e. Notepad, Paint, and Internet Explorer. Maybe you had some apps pre-installed, like MS Office or Photoshop, nothing wrong with that (although you probably paid too much for the app and I hope you have the CD/DVDs), those apps are all good too. However your brand new system probably also has what is referred to as 'crapware'. Crapware is software that is bundled on the HDD image by the manufacturer. Some of it may be a trial/demo version, i.e. McAfee Internet Security or Norton. Others may be odd games or music apps. First-Things-First… De-Crapification.
